BACKGROUND

I, Lizel Botma (the Complainant), ID: 8206070025080, entered into a 2-year contract with Planet Fitness in 2020. The Applicant submits that the contract was for a 2 year period.

On 12 February 2021 the Complainant requested to cancel her contract because she was retrenched and could no longer afford to pay her gym fees. At some point while attempting to cancel the contract via telecom at Planet Fitness Moreleta Park, the Complainant was told by the Consultant that there would be a termination fee applicable which amounted to R1600.00 plus minus. I kindly asked the consultant if there is any way possible they are able to accommodate me as I have just been retrenched and I have no indication if I would be able to secure a permanent job again as a result of COVID 19 affecting a lot of businesses. She clearly stated that Planet Fitness cannot accommodate me and I have to pay the full amount in order to cancel the contract. I find the service I received very unprofessional and would like Planet Fitness to understand I am not cancelling the contract because I want to but because of a retrenchment which is beyond my control and as a result of this I cannot afford any payment whatsoever.
